Dear Beloved Congregation,
With God’s grace, we are approaching Stage 2 of our Future Project, which includes the planned demolition of The Lion’s Den building. In July 2022, the sitting Parish Board commissioned an independent project study, which offered valuable insights for advancing our Future Project. This study highlighted that Darebin Council has a strong interest in preserving the building due to its historical significance.
In response, the Building Advisory Committee with the sitting Parish Board’s approval, promptly applied for a Section 29A Demolition Consent in October 2023. As many are aware, the building is in a state of significant deterioration, limiting its ability to meet the future needs of our Parish. If it were to receive historical protection status, it could hinder the progress of our Future Project.
With the Section 29A permit nearing its expiry, we are now ready to proceed with demolition. Through God’s grace, contractors have been engaged, and work is set to begin in the coming weeks. During this period, there will be some necessary adjustments to accommodate the works; further details will be provided next week.
We ask that you keep our Future Project and our beloved Church in your prayers! #stmarkscocmelb
